Sunday Friends was started about 12 years ago by a small group of parents who felt that the children of the parish should have an opportunity to celebrate the gospel in a way that was meaningful to them, in a language they understand.

It is aimed at children who are between the ages of approximately 4 up until the time they make their First Holy Communion.  What we ask of the younger children is that they are able to sit quietly for up to 20 – 30 minutes, so if you think your child may have difficulty in doing so, you may wish to wait bringing them into Sunday Friends until they are old enough to manage this.

We have volunteer helpers each week that are there to assist in the liturgy and to make sure your child is safe, so we would encourage parents to stay in the main church for Mass.  We also ask that children refrain from bringing in food, drink or toys into Sunday Friends.  As you can imagine, the fewer the distractions, the better!

Once children make their Holy Communion, they ‘graduate’ from Sunday Friends and are encouraged to attend Followers, aimed at 8 – 11 year-olds, which meets the first Sunday of every month as well as weekly during Advent and Lent.

All of our volunteers comply with the diocese’s child protection policy, a copy of which is available on the notice board just beyond the entrance to the church.

We also like to recognise the birthdays of all the children who attend Sunday Friends.  We sing ‘Happy Birthday’ at the beginning of each session to those celebrating their birthday in the coming week plus we try to list their names on the weekly ‘Look leaflet’ that your child takes away with them each week.  If you’d like your child to be included in this, please complete the attached slip with details of your child’s birthday and hand it to a helper or leave it in the Sunday Friends tray at the porch entrance of church.

Finally, we’d love for Sunday Friends to continue for another 12 years and beyond, but cannot guarantee this without the continued support of parents.  We are in desperate need of some more helpers, so please consider volunteering - the task is not that onerous and you’d be expected to help out approximately once in every 5 – 6 weeks.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and we hope your child is enjoying their time in Sunday Friends.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact me, or any of the helpers .
